Once I had the bedsides off to the sandblasters, I decided to tackle replacing the bearings and seals on the axles. I'll spare you most of the details and instead refer you to Paul (in NY)'s excellent site showing step by step how to do this.

I followed his instructions (along with the manual) and found it went pretty easily...
I fabricated my bearing puller using a slide hammer and a couple thick washers, the largest of which had to be cut down to fit. I stacked up the washers on a bolt that fit the slide hammer, then slipped bolt with the washers laying sideways into the axle behind the inner bushing/seal. Repeated raps with the slide hammer failed to loosen the bushing though… so I used a propane torch to heat the outer axle housing. This expanded the outer housing enough to loosen the bushing a bit and then the hammer and washer setup worked fine.
New inner seal, bushing, and top and bottom bearings.
I wanted to use my press to remove the old races from the knuckle halves, but I had left it sitting behind the truck. I couldn't put the wheel back on to move the truck over and didn't really want to try and push it around on the floor jack, so I had to climb through the frame and just use the press where it sat.
